Hey everyone, it’s Kat Marie’s husband and I wanted to add a slightly different perspective than my wife because even though I consider myself a local now (read our story here) I originally grew up in the Midwest very far away from the ocean lifestyle I now claim. In this blog post, I will share the top 10 interesting facts about the beach and some of the things that surprised me!

The beach is a place that is beloved by many people all around the world, whether you live near one like me or simply visited for a small vacation. I’m talking not only in the middle of the country, but in the middle of the continent.

So without further ado – here are this country mouse’s top 10 interesting facts about the beach!

The Sand

Sand is one of the most iconic things about the beach! There are countless references to “sand between your toes” but I was more than a little surprised by how hot it can get!

I don’t think it’s ever been enough to actually burn my feet, but nonetheless it’s important to wear shoes or sandals when walking on the sand during the day if you actually want to be comfortable.

The Salt Water

facts about the beach

No really – It’s saltier than an old sailor’s language. Like most people growing up far away from the ocean my only exposure of what to expect is what I read in books or saw on TV/movies.

My first visit to the ocean was in late fall so I wasn’t able to dive into the cold water. I did dip my hand and took a taste. WOW! I was shocked, and later on when I actually got to dive in face first this “lake only” boy was hooked.

The Waves

Waves can be both exhilarating and intimidating at the same time. I was surprised by how powerful they can be, and how they can knock you off your feet if you’re not careful.

Rip currents are also a very real and very scary thing – seems like every year we see a sad local news story about an inexperienced swimmer meeting their demise because they weren’t prepared for them. Be prepared.

The Sun

My gorgeous wife’s ethnicity is one that makes her skin almost literally glow wonderfully brown after being sun kissed. My heritage on the other hand is one that even after 15 minutes in direct sunlight I end up looking like a steamed lobster.

The sun can be brutal at the beach, especially during the peak hours of the day. I was surprised by how quickly I could get sunburned, even when I thought I was protected.

If your complexion is near that of Jim Gaffigan I recommend the SPF50 for sure.

I also recommend a good pair of sunglasses!

The Wildlife

The beach is home to a variety of wildlife, and I was surprised by how close some of these animals would come to me, especially the seagulls! Can you believe there are little tiny GHOST CRABS too? They’re so wild to see skittering across the beach (pro-tip they come out around evening time) to get away from you.

This country boy also got to see some wild dolphins (my daughters went slightly more crazy about it than I did)! Sharks are apparently a thing, but I have yet to be nibbled at, so fret not and enjoy all these creatures from a safe distance.

The Parking

Or lack thereof. If you’re staying as part of a vacation and you’re at a beachside hotel then no worries here – you’re in their garage. Offsite and it’s a completely different story because parking is an industry all of its own down at the beach – and if you don’t play by the rules you can find your vehicle towed (another industry that thrives off of beach goers).

The lots can charge anywhere from hourly rates to flat fees – neither of which can be very friendly to your wallet if you’re not careful. Don’t be intimidated though, do your research and you’ll be able to find a spot no problem.

The culture

Beach culture is real and it’s glorious. It’s is a laid back lifestyle that pairs beautifully with all things “sand between the toes” and “nothing to do the rest of the day”.

In the midwest it’s “Hey, let’s go to the lake.” which has its own culture unto itself, but the ocean crowd has a seasonal vibe that is so distinct you have to experience it to truly understand.

It’s welcoming, and not pretentious at all – so come join the club!

The tourists

Make no bones about it, the tourism industry drives most of what goes down at our boardwalk. When I first arrived to the area I was pleasantly surprised by how nice everyone was, especially considering how I grew up with “Midwest nice” ingrained into my very being.

As I became localized I worried I would become jaded of tourists taking “my beach” away, but something interesting happened: I appreciated them more so than anything. They drive the local economy, providing jobs and keeping our area exciting to live in for sure!

The “locals only” beaches

Yes, they exist, and yes we’re pretty protective of them. They’re our hidden getaways from the crowded areas that fill up every season – but don’t worry you’re not missing too much as an outsider.

We get the same sand, same sun, but a lot less competition for parking and beach space. Plenty of beach for everyone at the end of the day.

The rules

The last interesting facts about the beach are the rules! No loud music? No fires or camping? No beer, what?!? Some folks might think of the beach being the last place where red tape would harsh your mellow, but the rules are there for a reason and usually for safety.

The signs are posted everywhere, so they’re hard to miss, but don’t hesitate to do your research because beach rules vary wildly from region to region.

My favorite was seeing the “no swearing” signs at our local beach – they’re not enforceable by law but they make for a great talking point among friends and family.

Final Splash

The beach is a place that is full of surprises, both good and bad. Despite the challenges that can come with visiting the beach, it is still a wonderful place to relax, have fun, and enjoy the natural beauty of the world around us. I hope you enjoyed my 10 interesting facts about the beach!
