Wow! What a great way to end the summer with a bang at the Virginia Beach oceanfront by having our annual competition called ECSC or East Coast Surfing Championship! This year the competition was presented by: Coastal Edge (our local surf shop).

What are the origins of surfing?
The history of surfing can be traced back to ancient Polynesia, where it was more than just a recreational activity but deeply ingrained in the culture and way of life. These early Polynesian surfers were skilled ocean navigators, using their knowledge of the sea and wave patterns to ride the waves for fun and transportation!
Surfing made its way to Hawaii
Surfing eventually made its way to Hawaii, where it flourished and became intertwined with Hawaiian society.
In ancient Hawaii, surfing held great cultural significance and was considered an art form. It was reserved for the ruling class and played a central role in ceremonies and rituals. Surfing was not just about riding waves; it encompassed spirituality, social status, and a deep connection to nature.
Surfing in the 60’s and 70’s
Surfing gained significant traction in the 1950s and 1960s when the introduction of lighter, more maneuverable surfboards revolutionized the sport.
