Visiting Virginia Beach

When to go to Virginia Beach for good weather

Virginia Beach has great weather year-round, so it depends on what your goal is with visiting. Virginia Beach’s weather pattern has four very different seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Each season offers its own unique attractions and experiences to enjoy!

Spring (March to May) is when the usual beach attractions start opening up at the oceanfront and the Farmers Market transitions to every other weekend to every weekend so we can enjoy the fresh fruit and veggies our area has to offer. There is still a random warm day during this time which makes taking a nice walk really enjoyable. If you want to beat the crowds, this is the time to go! Check out some activities you can do during the spring:

Summer (June to August) is the best time for beach weather is starting June until the end of August. Usually, this time you can expect 80–100-degree weather which is perfect for the beach. Lots of festivals are going on and just about every weekend there is some event that the entire family can enjoy. Check out my list of festivals here:

Autumn (September to November) is a time where If you’re looking for weather that is more cool and less potential for a sunburn. During this small-time frame, you’ll see weather around 70-85 degrees which can be great for lounging at the beach and maybe not a lot of getting into the water. My kids would definitely try!

In conclusion, During the winter (December to February) months, temperatures can dip down to 30 degrees and some random awesome days, go up to about 70. It’s weird thing that happens in our area, but we really enjoy it to break up the doldrums of winter. There are still a few festivals that happen but our favorite activity to do is Christmas Town at Busch Gardens! Take a look at this article:

Best times to see the Virginia Beach festivals

One of my favorite events is the Kite Festival! One of the best times with the kids!

Virginia Beach is becoming known as an up and coming festival destination for people of all ages. My personal favorite is the Neptune festival which happens in September.

This is really a big to-do because a person is crowned King Neptune of the parade and schools from all over our area come and show off their high school bands.

But you want to come for the beach right?!

One of the best times is during the month of May, there are so many festivals and concerts going on that most weekends during the summer have something going on.

Everything from the cultural to music festivals, we are for sure going to hit up most of them this summer. Check out this link here for a list of events happening!

When to go to Virginia Beach for great waves

Even though Virginia Beach isn’t known for its massive waves, we are known for its first surfing competition, East Coast Surfing Competition, or ECSC! I love taking my kids to this every year because the tourist have died down a little and parking isn’t too big of a hassle.

But if you’re coming to Virginia Beach strictly to surf our manageable waves, August is one of the best times.

Yes, it will be hot.

Yes, it is still considered tourist season.

But do you know what else happens this time of year? HURRICANES! Yes, we do get hit with them but one of the few good things it brings is great waves!

When I was in high school, I knew so many people that would look forward to the month of August because this is such a great time for waves. It’s no mistake that ECSC is held during that month!

For Frugal or budge conscious travelers, for most places, going during the off season is the best time to get a great deal. But what if you’re like me and dont have that luxury because your kids are in school?

Consider going the first week of June when the Oceanfront is first starting to ramp up tourist season and hotels are anxious to get the rooms filled.

Typically, right around the first week of June, prices are at their lower on many online booking sites. Check out my article for which booking site is right for you:

Best times and places to see holiday lights at the Beach

Going to Virginia Beach for the holiday season from November to Jan 2? Well, you’re going to really love visiting our area that time of year!

Several places to see the lights are at the Town Center in Virginia Beach where you can enjoy a holiday lights event which is free and open to the public. Another place is the lights on the Boardwalk which allows cars access to the boardwalk and see the wonderful display while hearing Christmas music and the crashing waves!

There are so many really great events all around the city, and if you’re willing, about 45 minutes away there is a great light display located in Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, VA. Check out this article on how to make the most of your trip there if you decide to go!

New Year’s Eve parties are also popular with Town Center being central to this celebration. Kid friendly events are available with a DJ and craft activities. Check out this link for the specific dates and times!
