The cold weather of winter is finally easing up and we are finally having a few really warm days that lets us stay outside for hours enjoying that wonderful sunshine.
Every year there are a few events that happen for a short period of time, but we try to do it because it is such a fun family experience.! This is the best spring outdoor activities for kids in Virginia Beach (learn some facts here about VB):
Why its important to plan outdoor activities for your kids
Planning outdoor activities for your kids is essential for their overall well-being and development. In today’s age of technology and indoor entertainment, it is crucial to prioritize outdoor play and exploration.
Outdoor activities provide numerous benefits for children, both physically and mentally It allows kids to engage in physical exercise, promoting healthy growth and development.
They can run, jump, climb, and play games that improve overall wellbeing by:
- Coordination
- Strength
- motor skills
- Fresh air
- Sunlight
Which are vital for their physical health and the absorption of essential vitamins like Vitamin D.
Being in nature helps reduce stress and anxiety, improving their mental well-being.
It allows them to disconnect from screens and connect with the natural world, fostering creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills.
Outdoor play also encourages social interaction and teamwork as children engage in group activities, learn to share, negotiate, and develop communication skills.

1. Strawberry Picking
Picking strawberries with kids is a fun and memorable springtime activity. From April to the end of May, we have several farms located in quaint Pungo, Virginia that offers U-pick fields which is the freshest possible produce!
It’s a great way to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, and teach children about where their food comes from. Kids will love searching through the rows of strawberry plants, looking for the biggest, ripest berries they can find.
I just love that we compete who gets the “Big Daddy” strawberry which makes them pick only the best strawberries.
2. Play Jungle Mini-Golf
Located on 23rd street, this 18-hole mini golf has been located at the oceanfront for 40 years and it is still fun and enjoyable as always. It’s a great way to spend time outdoors with friends or family, while enjoying some friendly competition. Mini golf is also a great way to improve hand-eye coordination and patience, as players need to take their time to carefully aim and putt their ball!

3. Explore First Landing State Park
First Landing State Park is a beautiful and serene natural oasis that has a variety of outdoor activities. The park features over 2,800 acres of forest, marshes, and waterways, making it the perfect destination for hiking, biking, kayaking, and fishing enthusiasts. The park also boasts a gorgeous beach, where visitors can relax, swim, and enjoy the stunning views of the Chesapeake Bay.
The kids love going here because there is always wildlife to observe and new sights to see every time. It also tires them out for naps too!
4. Adventure Park at the Virginia Aquarium
The park features over 170 challenging platforms and obstacles, including zip lines, tightropes, and swinging logs, spread out over multiple courses. In addition to the thrill of completing the courses, visitors can also enjoy stunning views of the surrounding forest and wetlands.
The Adventure Park is staffed by trained guides who ensure that all participants are equipped with the necessary safety gear and provide helpful tips and guidance throughout the experience.
I have heard so much about this park that we plan on going this summer when they have the lights on at night just gives it a magical experience.
5. Visit Old Beach Farmers Market
This is one of my favorite places to get local produce that’s really close to my house! The Old Beach Farmers Market in Virginia Beach is a vibrant and bustling community gathering place that showcases the best of local produce, artisanal goods, and handmade crafts. Every Saturday morning during spring/summer, locals and visitors alike flock to this market to experience the lively atmosphere and support local businesses.
The kids love checking this place out because there’s always little treats and goodies we get for them and I always feel good about buying local!
From farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to homemade baked goods, the market offers a wide variety of delicious and wholesome products. You can also find unique crafts, artwork, and jewelry made by talented local artisans.

Opening at the end of May, this place is the perfect way to start the spring season!
