One of the major perks of living by the ocean is there is almost an endless sea of choices for beach activities that my water-loving kids can partake in during the summer. In this article, I will cover the best places for surf lessons in Virginia Beach.
Surfing is one such activity and is easily one of the most recognizable and iconic beach pastimes that is also a great way to enjoy the sun, sand, and waves for “kids” of all ages.
Growing up, I had surf pictures on the walls of my bedroom *swoon Kelly Slater* and constantly talked to my parents about wanting to surf but they were very reluctant to sign me up because I was not a strong swimmer. Now that I have my own Beach Kid, she’s been doing swim lessons since 1st grade so I can prepare her for the day when she can do surf lessons in Virginia Beach!
But now my daughter is able to do something I never did: Go to a local surf lessons designed specifically for kids!

These camps offer a unique opportunity for children to learn to surf in a safe and fun environment, while making new friends and enjoying the beach – everything a beach mom could ask for – but as I said earlier, it’s taken me a lot to get comfortable with the idea of my daughter diving into the sport (literally and figuratively) and so I wanted to provide you all with the info I found below as I researched to help quell my fears.

WRV Surf Camp & Lessons – Virginia Beach, VA
Week #1 June 12-14 through Week #12 August 28-30 offers a good amount of time to learn!
Located near the oceanfront of Virginia Beach, WRV is a clothing store that offers beach ware, surfboards, skateboards and so much more! On my own car, I have one of their brand stickers proudly displayed.
Every summer, I see the pamphlet advertising for this and FINALLY I feel confident enough for my oldest beach kid to do it this summer! I will keep my readers updated on her progress!
Billabong Surf Camp presented by 17th Street Surf Shop
Jason Borte Surf Camp | Virginia Beach, VA (17thstbillabongsurfcamp.com)
This camp begins June 12th and run weekly through August 17th.
Another place that offers surf lessons is the 17th Street Surf camp which is also located at the VB oceanfront at the same titled shop. This place holds a lot of great memories for me personally because as a kid the shop was one of my favorite places to get my beach clothes!
I really like how this camp includes pictures of the kids enjoying things which they post to their social media but I love how it also includes an “end of camp” party to celebrate completion of the program – what kid doesn’t like a party?!?
VB Surf Sessions
Surf Camps & Lessons (vbsurfsessions.com)
Surf Camps run June 5 – September 8, 2023. Choose AM or PM & 3-Day or 5-Day options
Another great surf lesson school located at the heart of our oceanfront is VB Surf Sessions. This group not only offers surf lessons but also stand-up paddle board tours, kayak tours and rentals.
Having multiple options to enjoy the water is fantastic and has options for just about anyone!
Final splash
A surf camp for kids is a great way to introduce children to the joys of surfing in a safe and fun environment. The surf camps I provided above are excellent examples of surf camps that can teach kids new skills while promoting physical activity and a love of the outdoors.
So, if you’re looking for a fun and exciting activity for your kids this summer, consider signing them up for a surf camp!
